1. What is a gemstone?
A gemstone is the name given to a piece of mineral (or other rock or organic material) that after it has been cut and polished has been made into a piece of jewelry or another accessory.
Most rough gemstones may look like ordinary rocks or pebbles. After cutting and polishing, their full color and luster can be seen.
2. How are gemstones formed?
There are generally 4 ways gemstones can form:
- Igneous- These minerals are created deep within the earth (Diamonds, Ruby, Sapphire, Peridot)
- Hydrothermal- Gemstones are formed when bodies of mineral rich water cool (e.g. Emeralds)
- Metamorphic- As the name suggests, these are gems that are ‘morphed’ due to intense heat and pressure. (Sapphire, Ruby, Spinel, Garnet)
- Sedimentary- Gems that form due to water depositing sediments (Malachite, Azurite, Opal)
3. What is a freshwater pearl?
Freshwater and saltwater pearls may look quite similar, but they come from different sources. Cultured freshwater pearls are farmed pearls, grown using freshwater mussels.
4. Why is my gemstone not 100% clear?
Natural materials have natural imperfections, which give them their unique identity. Gems that are entirely clear and contain no inclusions are most likely man made.
Gemstones have some degree of naturally occurring inclusions which can be in the form of a cloud, or crystal. This gives each stones its unique appearance and no two stones are alike.
5. What is sterling silver?
Sterling silver is a precious metal which will last a lifetime. Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% of weight of silver - hence the hallmark '925'.
6. Why does my sterling silver tarnish?
Silver needs to be combined with other metals as pure silver is too soft to be worked with. The other metals, typically copper, that make sterling silver tarnish. The copper reacts to moisture and sulfur in the air, causing the sterling silver tarnish. Silver tarnishes faster in areas with high humidity and air pollution.
7. How do I take care of my Stella Rose sterling silver jewelry?
It is important to properly store and care for your sterling silver jewelry in an area with low humidity and preferably an airtight bag.
It is best to remove your sterling silver jewelry before exercising, swimming, showering, applying hair products and lotion, as these can cause your jewelry to lose it's luster more quickly.
Even the best cared for jewelry will sometimes require cleaning. While there are many solutions available to polish silver, we recommend using a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth . A liquid solution polishing solution might damage the more delicate pearls and gemstones in your Stella Rose collection.
